Grove is Out as Pens Pre and Post Game Host

Postby Dickie Dunn » Wed Aug 05, 2015 10:09 am

Regardless of their reasoning for letting Grover go, it's a stupid move. "Changes to the Penguins' 24/7 radio brand"? Penguins 24/7 is nigh unlistenable and changing the pre and post game radio host on terrestrial radio isn't going to change that. Removing him from the broadcast makes it worse, regardless of who replaces him. The Penguins have become obsessed with their brand, do all kinds of off ice nonsense to improve the brand, and still don't seem to realize that the only thing with a real impact on "the brand" is on ice success. You sell jerseys because you win. You get insane TV and radio ratings (and the subsequent money) because you win. The sellout streak exists because of winning. Not because of the amount of community service the organization does, or having players deliver pizza to fans in line, or making a "family friendly" in-game environment (that is in no way wallet friendly), or because of the nonsense you want Grove's replacement to do. Sometimes this organization just can't get out of it's own damn way and I truly hope there is enough negative reaction to this that they recant their decision.

Here's the job posting. What a radical change. Good luck finding a "team ambassador" with as much knowledge and respect as the one you just let go. Idiots.
Broadcast: Broadcasting

Penguins New Media – Radio Broadcast Host - Pittsburgh Penguins (Pittsburgh, PA)

Description: Exciting opportunity to host pre- and post-game radio shows for all 82 regular season games (plus playoffs) for the Pittsburgh Penguins Radio Network; will also do live on-camera intermission updates on the video board at CONSOL Energy Center for all home games; host of weekly Pensweek audio magazine; various podcasts as warranted by team news during the week. Qualified candidates also will have the opportunity to have additional on-camera responsibilities for the team’s website, social media and PensTV

Reports to: Penguins Media Group leadership team, which consists of: VP of Communications, VP of Marketing, SVP of Sales and Broadcasting

Duties and Responsibilities:
•Be the primary host of pre-game and post-game shows on all Pittsburgh Penguins Radio Network broadcasts
•Provide live on-camera intermission updates on the video board at CONSOL Energy Center for all home games
•Participate in intermission segments on radio for all road games
•Provide play by play coverage for Penguins Radio Network preseason games when the current play by play voice is not available (typically five games)
•Serve as a back-up play by play or color analyst for Pittsburgh Penguins Radio Network in the event of unforeseen circumstances
•Voice and produce short duration audio features that would be distributed to Penguins Radio Network affiliate stations or social media channels
•Host on camera video features for the Penguins website, mobile app and social media channels during the season and off season as assigned by the PensTV executive producer
•Host the Penguins weekly one hour audio magazine “Pensweek” to be broadcast on flagship station WXDX-FM and participating Penguins Radio Network stations
•Develop one-on-one relationships with players, coaches, managers and hockey operations staff to improve the opinions and importance of the radio to them. Use those individuals as show guests whenever possible
•Work with producer and executive producer on the radio network's on air imaging and production values
•Provide voice over work for commercials and in-house audio production that may air on the Pittsburgh Penguins Radio Network.
•Serve as an ambassador and make appearances on behalf of the Pittsburgh Penguins Radio Network and the team in general
•Make appearances in other Pittsburgh media to serve as a team expert and promote the Pittsburgh Penguins Radio Network

Qualifications
•Qualified candidates should have a minimum of three years on air sports broadcasting experience with a professional sports franchise. Certain collegiate sports broadcasting experience would also qualify and be a benefit. Candidates should have extensive knowledge of the NHL and the game of hockey in particular and be able to provide instant analysis of game conditions and results. Additionally, ideal candidates would possess the unique balance of being able to be a team ambassador and a credible analyst of the team's games.

They could've kept Grove on as pre- and post-show host and created a new position for all the other crap they wanted him to do. It seems like they're combining two jobs so they only have to pay one person.

Other than the pre/post game show on the way home from the game, I don't listen to PensRadio. And I'm sure as hell not going to listen to it now.

I think his full time job probably pays significantly more than this job would.

Going by the job description, it seems like they are looking for a young hipster doofus to do this job.

He's definitely a hipster doofus, but he isn't young. I'm guessing they'll go for a late 20s something.

If you read Rob Owen's TV columns in the Post Gazette he often reaches out to Grove for questions about Comcast service and technology.

Grover knew too much about the operation. When you's knows too much, you sleeps with the fishes.

This sucks, Grove was always at his best when the fan base was about to jump a bridge. He kept every one calm and focused.

OK, so now knowing what the Pens are looking for who do you want and who are some other names that could fill that role.
Name 3-4 guys (or girls)

What the what?!? First the Pirates dump Rocco Demaro, now this. Who's next, Tunch and Wolf? Not to mention Lange getting the shaft a few years back.
If only they'd get rid of Tunch and Wolf. Tunch especially.
