For those that are draft (or undraft?) nerds like me...I've been looking at the criteria listed above ^ and broke down the players (~100) into what leagues they came from...[DY Lg. = Draft Year League, D+1 Lg. = League they're in the year after their first draft eligible season, Sign Lg. = League they were in when signed to first NHL contract]

Where do undrafteds come from do you think?

hockeydb needs to update their info. https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdi ... pid=208993
I know he has some of his stuff scripted to pull from other sites, but I'm guessing that contract status box isn't one of them.

Puckpedia, which is where he sources his info from, has the updated info that shows Legare signing a one-year/two-way with the Devils last Tuesday.

I feel like lots of undrafted players come from NCAA D1 of that's what's being asked.

Are you counting OHL/QMJHL/WHL as one entity?

Would also guess, outside of NCAA, you see a decent amount of UDFA from SM Liiga and the SHL

There is a definite thought process as self-identifying as a late-bloomer and choosing the NCAA route

No on Swiss A (NLA).

The relationship between the junior leagues is a little bit interesting actually...perhaps the weakness of the Q has created a situation where it's actually a bit under-scouted at this point...

As you'll see below, the QMJHL is actually #2 in the "where were you in your draft year?" list. Narrowly ahead of the WHL. That said, the staying power is a little rougher for the QMJHL. Of the 8 players that made 100 games, only 4 made it to 200 games. But...similarly, of the 7 WHL kids that made 100 games, only 3 made it to 200.

Indeed. The nature of the MHL (Rus. Jr.) plus geopolitical nonsense that somehow leaks into this, creates a situation where the KHL becomes a good spot to unearth a high-end pro player (and Plotnikov)...

Well now I'm just stuck thinking of other leagues...

The AHL has gotta be #2 for Sign Lg. right?

No way the DEL makes the list. I feel any remotely talented Czech is usually drafted, so I doubt the Extraliga.

AHL is indeed #2 in the signing category...split up though as "NHL signing from THEIR affiliate" vs "NHL signing from unaffiliated club", it's actually 12 vs 19. The higher total being the unaffiliated route.

No on the DEL...but the Czechs are interesting, not high on numbers, but high on efficiency...all four players that took this route:
Cze U20 league -> Cze Extaliga ended up playing over 200 games, if they played 100.

EDIT: As I was typing that, mr25 popped in...not USNTDP specifically (as that generally gets over-scouted, only one player qualified from The Program and that was Frank Vatrano if I recall)...but the USHL, in general, is a winner...

No to Canadian USPORTS.

Players aren't signed out of the USHL...but in their DY they were USHL players, then likely went to NCAA, then were signed or became AHLers then were signed...

Indeed. Mass Prep and then I'll just give the last one, as it's probably not in the purview of virtually anyone else here...it's the OJHL (Ontario Jr. A)

DY Lg.| # of players
1. USHL 12
2. QMJHL 8
3. MHL 7
Prep-MA 7
OJHL 7
WHL 7

##

D+1 Lg. | # of players
1. USHL 14
2. NCAA 14
3. QMJHL 10
4. WHL 7
OHL 7

##

Sign Lg. | # of players
1. NCAA 37
2. AHL 31
3. KHL 12
--------------

Given the most popular pathways in the data...

USHL -> USHL -> NCAA
Prep-MA -> Prep-MA -> NCAA
QMJHL -> QMJHL -> AHL
Cze U20 -> Cze U20 -> Cze
T1EHL U18 -> USHL -> NCAA
MHL -> MHL -> KHL

There's something to be said about shorter schedules, incremental league quality increases over more time for finding successes in players that were deemed not to be worthy of a draft pick hundreds of times previously...

Good question. Been asking myself that too.

I do know he's working on his game a lot with Matt Cullen and apparently making big improvements with the puck and away from the puck. Given a few things a bud of mine told me, he pays more attention to scouting reports than I do, he needs to beef up a bit and get stronger on the puck. Still, give him a shot in the fall maybe ? If nothing else, sign him to an ELC and assign him to WBS.
