What If The Pens Dont Make The Playoffs?

Trading one of 87/71/58 is not a solution. Finding the right people to put aroun them is the solution.
Completely agree. Trading top players in their respective positions doesn't help the team. The Pens just need to spread money around better than being so top heavy. They need rookies and players on cheap contracts to exceed their contracts. They needed Beau Bennett to play to potential and Olli Maata to be healthy.

Yea I think these past games show how important Crosby, Letang, and Malkin are. And I think it sort of debunks that they are the problem- it's pretty obvious they are the solution. But a lot of the second tier players: Kunitz, Perron, sutter, Bennett, scuderi, even recently paul Martin a little, are not playing the way they need to play

Doesn't seem so silly them missing out now. Never thought it would come to the last three games. Tuesday is a must win.

So, do we buy R****'s reporting that the Pens will be in financial straights if they do not make the playoffs?

I'm sure someone will correct you on that last part.

I'm sure it's sensational nonsense from Rossi, but since the franchise resurgence their financial operating model assumes two playoff series.

They spent to the cap (and beyond if you take into account what they had to pay guys that have missed most of the year)... Not that hard to believe that they might lose money.

They're tied for the wild card right meow.

It's in the realm of possibility that they miss the playoffs. I would welcome it as it would give me a chance to not purchase and flip my playoff tickets, as people have really stopped clamoring for tickets altogether. It's a difficult sale since the team has sucked since 2009.

I wouldn't say straights but they certainly won't make money like they used to, might even be a loss with paying any uninsured LTIR.

Add in the money they are still paying the former management and coaches.

They'll be fine they can just cobrand more snack food like Power Play chips or add sponsors to more random events during the game. "fans, that last Icing call was brought to you by Party Cake bakery"

If a team sells out every game and can lose money, they should have another lockout soon.

They also need Letang and Malkin to be healthy. Letang has taken a beating over his career and I would certainly entertain offers for him.

I agree the Pens need to do a better job of spreading the money across the team. We have all these young defenseman and are paying Letang 7.5M, Martin 5M and Ehrhoff 4M. Let Martin and Ehrhoff walk and use the money on depth forwards / get the young defensemen playing.

Looking at available UFA's for this offseason, there arent a whole lot of decent options. No clear cut top 6 guys that can improve our offense and there isnt a top pairing guy to replace Martin.

I just dont see an offseason where this team can retool quickly without making major trades.

The team has more than enough to fill the net as is. Better managed top 6 is probably more of a solution.

I wouldn't mind the Pens moving for a few college free agents. They aren't plentiful but guys like Chris Kreider can come in and make an impact right away.

Guys like Chris Kreider get drafted in the first round in the first year of eligibility for the draft.
