"This is my town, see?"
Giacomo Maribespucci, the undisputed leader of the Pikadakowpie, Iowa mafia conglomeration, spoke from a cramped booth seat near the back of the local Diary Queen. Two hundred thirty-three families made up the Pikadakowpie Cosa Nostra, but Giacomo was the Boss. Well, technically, he was a car waxer, but -- make no mistake -- he was the Boss. History alone will tell how many enemies he waxed off.
Heh. Heh. Waxed off.
"Yeah, Boss, you know best," caporegime Sforzza Chiaroscuro said. "But, uh, y'know, maybe some people may be gettin' ... uh, y'know ... uh ... anxious ... about the killings. I mean, I ain't! Haha! I ain't, but, y'know, I been hearin' things." Chiaroscuro, alone among the caporegimes, was always seeing the dark along with the light. Now he was visibly sweating. "I'm just sayin' that maybe we should slow this thing down, y'know? Like, maybe stop killing every night ... I mean, every single night! Y'know, Boss? I mean, somebody might start payin' attention. I'm just sayin', Boss, y'know ... I'm just sayin'."
Giacomo looked up from his chicken-fingers-and-fries basket and fixed Chiaroscuro with a silent stare.
"Look, Boss," stammered Chiaroscuro, "I mean, I ain't sayin' nothin'. I ain't sayin' nothin', Boss. Haha!"
Giacomo's gaze moved slowly around the booth at his other capos, finally resting again on Chiaroscuro, who was now fidgeting and clearly scared. "It's alright, cugnatu," said Giacomo. "You know I value the opinions of all of my consiglieri." His eyes moved once again to each of the other capos in the booth. One by one, each looked away.
"Thank you, gentlemen," said Giacomo dismissively. "Now, if you don't mind, I'd like to finish my dinner. The Oreo Blizzard® waits for no man."
Sforzza Chiaroscuro was seen on security footage at the local Wal-Mart the following day. He bought an Italian BMT at the Subway and a pack of cigarettes on aisle 12. Then it's said that he took a river cruise on the Mississippi.
He was never seen again.
Giacomo told his wife that her brother Sforzza was hiding in Cuba. She believed him.
But others did not.
Unbeknownst to the Boss of Pikadakowpie, federal agents had now gotten wind of the goings-on. And, as always, others were gunning for Giacomo Maribespucci. Some say there was a traitor in the family. Some say there was more than one -- that the capos and their families had differing agendas. Others say it was just the vast amount of killings that finally tipped the feds off.
In the end, Giacomo was confused. In all the cable TV shows he liked to watch, there were so many killings in small towns. No one ever seemed to notice.
Well, someone has noticed now.
