I would take Meadows over Appel right now...Appel's bad decision saved the Pirates from themselves, but they never should have drafted him in the first place. Is this said in hindsight, or did you really think the Pirates should have passed on Appel because he wouldn't turn out to be a major league...

Haha, nice catch. I don't usually listen to podcasts that often, so chalk one up for the old brain fart.

Just read a podcast on Grantland on the new show. Apparently CBS was all ready to take on the show but at the last second pulled the plug. TV Land swooped in and took it from there.
The show may flop, but he's still my favorite comedian.

You're trying to use your TV as an audio switcher, and that's a bad idea for a number of reasons. Optical cables (in practice) don't have enough bandwidth to carry the two main bluray audio codecs (Dolby TrueHD and DTS-MA). So you definitely want to send an HDMI cable from your bluray source to you...

General question regarding audio: I have a home theater system with a blu-ray that is connected via HDMI to a Smart TV for video and via optical cable to a receiver for audio. However, the audio is really lacking through the optical cable. The music and sound effects are somewhat muffled, even thoug...

Buying/General Info Bicycle Thread
You may want to consider buying a used hybrid. $300 isn't going to get you much in a new bike, but if you find someone "trading up"... If you can handle basic bicycle mechanics, look on CL and other "penny saver" type publications (maybe garage sales?). If your aren't good with wrenches, consider t...

Looking Into Buying a Road Bike Thread
I am in the market for an inexpensive road bike (thinking <$300). Will mainly use it for riding around town. Any folks of 5AF have experience with this? If you are only going to ride around town, look into a commuter bike or city bike vs a full road bike. Road bikes are good for long distances (thi...

You know what really grinds my gears...
I love my car, but man I think it's time to trade it in. After fixing a leaky sunroof for the second time in 3 years, my trunk decided to go haywire. It's an electronic trunk release and just up and quit on me. Googled the issue, bought the parts the interwebs determined were the likely culprit, and...
BEER
At the airport 2 hours before boarding Had the "pleasure" of having this conundrum last night in Charlotte after I missed my connecting flight to PGH. Ended up getting a Goose Island IPA at the bar. Not my favorite beer, tastes pretty much like every other generic IPA I've had. In Houston, however,...

What a selfish way to look at the world... there's nothing after this life so why bother? I think it's pretty much the exact opposite... this is the ONLY life that I have, so why not try my hardest to make the best of this life? sorry if it seems harsh, but I'm just trying to understand the other s...

What I'm trying to say is, if there is no purpose to life, if there is no meaning, why have the sciences? Why try to find a cure for cancer, or whether or not there is other life out there? What makes humans have the desire to be better, to achieve great things? Yes, this does delve into the philoso...

I ended up buying a Smart 3D floor model for ~$750 a couple years ago. I didn't even want the 3D, but that was when 3D was the shiznits and that's all they were selling at best buy. I'd normally shop online, but it was actually a good deal at the time. Not sure what the market is now. Samsung is a r...

Knowing all the answers, but also seeking purpose. again, seeking purpose will be left to the religious and philosophers. Scientists tend to not really care about purpose and meaning in their studies. Maybe in their free time, but that's not what generally got them into science. Sorry, but I should...

Picked up a Troeg's variety pack and surprisingly there are some decent ones in there. Hop Back Amber and Trogenator Double Bock were quite tasty.

Looking to buy a bigger tv for the living room. Not going balls out 4k or curved or anything like that. Just a 60"-65"er for a decent price. Any suggestions brand wise? I'm leaning towards Samsung or Vizio right now. You're first question should be plasma vs. LCD. Although I think more folks tend t...

I also question people's faith in science. Science is a creation of man. It's what our brains conceive to help us understand the world around us. It's a means to explain existence, and to an extent purpose. How is that different than belief in a god? Another way of putting this: most non-Christians...

My biggest problem with people who 'attack' religious people is the assumption that they were force fed an idea, fell for it, refuse to question any of it, and choose to live in complete naivety of the 'real' world around them. Most Christians, or any other denomination, are rational, pragmatic peo...
