Cars & Bikes, Driving & Riding

Sort of a back in my day, yes, because I learned on a manual (taught by my mother, who like my grandma also drove only manuals, ya nancy boys), and the first car I drove was a manual. Also, the second car I drove was a manual, the first car I bought myself was a manual, and the second car I bought m...

More on an article posted above. Five Albuquerque cops have now resigned in connection with an alleged conspiracy under which officers in the DUI unit allegedly took payoffs to make drunk driving cases disappear by failing to show up for court, which resulted in the charges being dismissed. https://...

Listen, I'm being told on Twitter that Mayor Pete should have prevented this. Not Mayor Pete, but I'm going to call this a failure of government, specifically the Maryland Transportation Authority. The lesson from the Sunshine Skyway Bridge disaster was that a bridge over a major commercial waterwa...

Live video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXQSf93KnQ0 TIL that a piling used to protect a bridge or similar structure, or to mark a navigational channel, is called a "dolphin," and a protective bulwark surrounding the piers of a bridge is called a "starling." After more than 30 minutes of ransacking the family's home, the AirPods—which had been stolen in a carjacking earlier that day—were found on the street outside the family's home, where they had almost certainly landed after being tossed out the window of the stolen car. https://twitter.com/Riverfron...

I bought this bookcase a couple years ago. Brand is "Concepts In Wood." I believe it's still veneered wood of some sort, but it's much sturdier and made of thicker materials of notably higher quality than all of the stuff I looked at from Ikea and local department stores and the like. I think they a...

There probably are alternative routes, but they're probably something like going out in a big loop through like Denver and Phoenix to get back to SoCal, and it would take like three days to get there.

The real divert option would be a bus. Which might get there faster than the train anyway.

Trump is basically "house poor." His wealth (the amount of which is subject to much debate, and has likely dropped precipitously given the current commercial-real-estate market) is mostly in the form of real estate, which is illiquid. Bonds on appeal are for the purpose of making sure that if the ap...

An interesting suit. Hermès apparently only sells Birkin Bags (I assume some sort of ridiculously expensive purse?) to customers who buy a lot of other Hermès stuff first. That's certainly not a unique thing in the luxury-goods world; for example, Ferrari basically reserves certain models for custom...
