Because the only way an insurance company turns a profit (or at least a large profit) is by denying claims. That's why for-profit insurance companies run such absurdly high overhead.

The whole reason we have the entanglement with employers now is because wages were frozen during WWII. Fringe benefits were exempted from that, so companies started offering subsidized health insurance to induce people to work for them. If that nexus were eliminated, the wage incentive would return....

Which is one the reasons why Obamacare is so awful. It basically takes the current system and doubles down on it while enriching the big healthcare companies.
