Ok...so i guess it's cost prohibitive to just mirror all the data to a different machine. i haven't looked lately, but there used to be a disk space limit on most of the popular off-the-shelf NAS's. and 20+TB exceeded it, IIRC. i think, if you can pull it off, you'd want a RAID 5 setup, where (for i...

so wait...what's your inventory right now? you have 9TB in your HTPC and 12TB in your external enclosure? is the external for backup, or do you have 21TB of "production" space. a 6TB western digital drive is $249 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822236797 if that external enclos...

her...i liked it. a lot. while i don't think the world will ever see THAT level of A.I. (or anything close to it, really), it was still thought provoking as to the value of the relationship. i don't believe in the human soul. and i believe that all we are is a collection of our past experiences comb...

my issue with RAID is that if the controller dies, you're in trouble. so there is still a single point of failure. i don't know how common that is, but it gives me the willies none the less.

and like i said, i can't imagine THAT level of need for redundancy in home use.

agreed. the North Korea royal family are such gigantic ego maniacs, that they in no way want to sign a contract for their own destruction.

I need to commit to a server. I'm scared of raid mostly because I'm a novice with it. unRaid sounds like the right flavor for me.
don't get a "server". set up another low profile PC, with 2 6TB western digital green drives on it. it will serve files, yes. but will also be a stand alone HTPC.

You could just set up port forwarding to Remote Desktop into your PC, and move files that way. Not that you need convincing...just a different way to go about it. I'm sure there are plenty if programs you can install on a PC that match the integrated remote access features of a NAS. And while those ...

I don't see the benefit of a NAS. Any PC can perform file sharing. And it's less hardware to buy. I'm a picture quality junky so I collect uncompressed blue ray rips. The average movie is 25GB or so. I have no idea how disks work but I think this one stacks memory into several layers...or something.

Samsung built a 16TB SSD.

Can't wait to put all my movies (I have about 11TB worth) on one fast drive in my compact home theater PC. I could take it on family trips, or if I'm in the hospital or something.

Definitely want. Do not want to pay thousands of bucks for it. Will wait a few years.

if you consider .00001% change to be considerable, you really need to look at a dictionray it's considerable, trust me. if you spend even a modest amount of time looking into the opposition of legalization who are in power and the reasons that are provided to support their position, you would agree.

tif said it was down "considerably". according to the first chart, drug use has gone UP since decriminalization (of course, down since 2007). As per the other two, I don't think going down half a percent is "considerable" any drop higher than 0.0% is considerable. you're nitpicking in a weird way h...

drug use is down because it was legalized (edit - or decriminalized according to shmenguin)? I have a hard time believing that. What about people that stay away from the stuff because it is illegal?
