Although I disagree, I can understand the aversion to brown rice. I have a similar aversion to certain preparations of barley. Pearled barley is wonderful. A necessary addition to any vegetable soup. But regular barley? I haven't yet gotten into it. I don't really like it. Too chewy, slippery. I fee...

I generally keep supplies of three types of rice: (1) the red cargo rice; (2) basmati rice, and (3) a short-grain Japonica rice. For the short-grain, I like the Tamanishiki brand. It's a US-grown hybrid of Koshihikari rice and Yumegokochi rice. I once read an article about what brands of rice that ...

I personally prefer red cargo rice to brown rice. I get it at Oriental Market on McKnightmare road. Comes from Thailand, I think. Very nice nutty flavor. Sounds great. I will definitely try to get some. That's the thing I love about really good brown rice: toast it for a couple of minutes and the n...

To be clear, I am emphatically defending rice. Good organic brown rice with lentils, sweet peas, spring onions, and a properly-done curry is wonderful. Maybe even some eggplant if I have time. Or stir-fried rice with vegetables, soy sauce, and peanuts (no Listeria, please). Maybe some tofu if I have...

Yeah, no one defending Rice. Except his lawyers, I suppose, which is right and proper, or so I'm led to believe. If he gets off with whatever, fine. More importantly, if someone shoves some brains into him (unlikely), maybe he'll work out. Otherwise, KC will be fine. Hopefully the greater Dallas are...

Worthy's a tough kid. Three productive years at Texas and the film often shows him throwing his shoulder into DBs for extra yards instead of just running out of bounds.

But that picture. God, it makes me laugh. Putting him in between those two OLs...

... how to successfully adapt a complicated source narrative from prose to suit a filmic storytelling framework. I presume this is California-talk for "turning great things into sh*t." "filmic." Really? I apologize. I'm just bored, love Tolkien, and feel like talking. The talking part won't last.

I have the Rob Inglis audiobooks. I've heard that maybe the Serkis ones are as good or better, but I'm not gonna spend my credits on such repetition.

I like the Inglis LotR, 'though I still prefer the Martin Shaw Silmarillion.

Here's another perspective that you will hate: My intro to Tolkien/LOTR was the Peter Jackson movies. I know them backwards and forwards, have watched the appendices a ridiculous amount of times, all of the commentary tracks, etc. I really love them. I tried listening to the Serkis audiobooks and q...

I don't think I've ever heard of anyone loathing those movies. I was about to say "loathing" is too strong a word. But I stopped and thought a bit. I gotta be honest. I do, in fact, loathe the movies. I loathe for what could have been. Once again, I know (generally) what it takes to get movies made...

Peter Jackson and his team knew nothing of the feel of Tolkien. Jackson loved to spend 30 minutes on stupid CGI battles with things flying through the air but couldn't take 30 seconds to put in Tolkien's beautiful language. Think of Gandalf at the Bridge of Khazad Dum. Think of Gimli's reaction to G...

How many know that, constitutionally, the Presidential candidate and the Vice Presidential candidate cannot be from the same state?

How stupid is that? Just another reason to scrap this bloody US Constitution and make a new one.
